Our Curriculum

Accounting

Accounting is an information system that provides financial and other information for making and evaluating decisions about the allocation of resources. It is a system of recording, reporting, analysing, and interpreting the financial information of an accounting entity and involves the conveyance of relevant business information to interested users. This information is used to help evaluate performance, to facilitate decision making and control, and to report on the operation of an organisation from internal and external perspectives.

The course of study will help students collect, analyse and organise accounting information and financial data from a variety of sources; communicate accounting information, decisions, judgements and recommendations; use mathematical ideas and techniques in preparing and interpreting accounting and financial data; develop skills of critical thinking, problem solving and decision making in the context of theoretical and practical accounting situations; and use and apply a range of information and communication technologies, accounting software packages and spreadsheets.

The skills and attitudes gained in this course will prepare students for a variety of entry points to employment in both employee and employer roles, as well as preparing them for continuing study at tertiary level. Students are provided with opportunities to develop skills in managing financial resources that they can apply at a personal level and in the business environment. They are encouraged to think logically, to apply accounting principles in a consistent and effective manner, and to become independent learners.

LEARNING EXPERIENCES
The learning experiences involved in Accounting reflect the active and practical nature of the course.  They present the students with realistic accounting situations and students are encouraged to develop their knowledge and skills and express opinions about accounting situations.  Students may be involved in activities that include the following; group work, excursions, debates, discussions, research activities, case studies, use of computers and internet, assignments and projects, oral presentations, work experience, media watch, role plays, games and simulations, talks from specialist speakers and lecturers, audio-visual and television presentations, statistics and data analysis, and practice class sets together with many of the more traditional teaching and learning activities.

PREREQUISITE SUBJECT

ASSESSMENT
The student is assessed on 3 criteria:

  • Knowledge, Interpretation and Evaluation
  • Routine Practical Procedures
  • Challenging Practical Application
