Senior School
Senior students have timetabled classes 4 days per week. School begins at 8:05am on Monday and Tuesday morning and 8:20am on Thursday and Friday morning for Year 11 and 12 students. School finishes each day at 3:00 p.m.
Students in the senior school at Wynnum High study six (6) subjects. English and a Mathematics subject are compulsory. The four (4) remaining subjects can be chosen from Senior Authority Subjects, Senior Authority Registered Subjects and/or Vocational Certificates.
Students in Years 11 and 12 at Wynnum High are offered the opportunity to undertake a school based-traineeship or apprenticeship. This senior pathway is a very important pathway offering students flexibility to be successful at school. School-based apprenticeships and traineeships (SATs) allow students to work towards a nationally recognised qualification while completing their senior studies. Under the SAT program students will receive their Senior Statement, will also have trained towards a qualification in their chosen career and been paid for time spent working. Training takes place while at work, at school or at a training provider.
SENIOR SUBJECTS
- Students in the senior school must choose six subjects
- Either English or English Communicationmust be chosen
- A Mathematics subject must be chosen
- Students choosing Mathematics C must also choose Mathematics B
- Students cannot choose two Physical Recreation courses
Students in Year 12 who have gained a school-based traineeship or apprenticeship may drop a subject so as to maximise success in both their studies and work. This is organised through the VET department and the Guidance Counsellor. Please note that Year 11 students who have gained a SAT will study 6 subjects. In exceptional circumstances only students may be permitted to study five (5) subjects due to circumstances other than the gaining of a SAT. This exemption is only considered in Year 12 and must be approved by the Guidance Counsellor and Deputy Principal.
Subject Changes – Students wishing to change subjects must see the Guidance Counsellor. The school allows three weeks into each semester for changes to occur. After this students must stay in the subject chosen for the semester. Under no circumstances can students simply change subjects themselves.
Sport
Sport is not compulsory for students in Year 11 and Year 12 on a Wednesday. Year 11 and Year 12 students who wish to participate in Interschool sport or Intraschool physical activities on Wednesday afternoons may do so as long as they commit to the activity for the whole season/program. Students wishing to gain selection in Queensland Secondary School Sport representative teams, that is District level and above, must commit to participation in Interschool sport activities for at least one entire season. Year 12 Queensland Core Skills practice tests will occur on a Wednesday and these are compulsory for OP eligible students.
Field Trips and Excursions
Certain subject areas have full day school excursions and field trips. The cost of these activities is not included in the Text, Equipment and Resources Scheme. Excursions are very valuable learning tools as they provide students with practical and real learning experiences. Written notification of excursions and field trips is given to parents and carers.
Reporting
In the senior school we report to parents and carers at the end of each semester. There is also an interim report in Semester 2 for Year 11 students. Senior reports are expressed as a five point letter scale: A-E. This letter scale correlates to the exit levels of Very High Achievement (VHA) – Very Low Achievement (VLA). Parent Teacher Interviews are held twice per year, but parent teacher contact is welcomed and encouraged by staff at all times.
