Marine and Aquatic Practices

Marine and Aquatic Practices is a senior Authority-registered subject.  It does not contribute towards an Overall Position but the subject and result will be included for the QCE and on the Senior Statement.

This course is designed to develop in students an awareness of the marine environment and related issues.  The four broad areas of the course of study are commercial, environmental, recreational and cultural.

Units to be studied may include:

  • water safety
  • first aid
  • boat building
  • waves and currents
  • oceans, coastlines and inland waterways
  • weather and tides
  • marine, coastal creatures and plants
  • food and cooking
  • aquaculture and mariculture

It is anticipated that most students will exit the course with a recreational Shipmaster’s Licence (RSML).

VALUE OF THE SUBJECT
The Marine and Aquatic Practices course enables students to acquire a basic set of skills which are useful in vocational areas such as deckhand/assistant fisher, marine technology and research, commercial fisher, ship’s pilot, sailor, boat building, design and chandlery.  The subject provides an opportunity to develop interests and skills that can play an important part in future recreation - boating, navigation, swimming, cooking, fishing and first aid.

PREREQUISITE SUBJECT
There are no necessary prerequisite subjects for Marine and Aquatic Practices.  Students must be willing to become involved in practical sessions and participate in the swimming unit as this is considered a safety factor for boating.

ASSESSMENT
Both practical and theoretical assessment will be used.  A variety of assessment techniques may be used including:

Short answer response Written response
Research and project work Practical work
Presentation of information Oral information
Demonstrations  Teacher observation

The attendance of students on excursions is considered part of the course.  Students will be required to attend boating and other associated activities out of school hours. The cost of these excursions is not included in the Text, Equipment & Resource Scheme and students will be informed of the cost at least one month prior to the excursion.
