Biology

Biology is a senior Authority subject that contributes to an Overall Position.  If you are interested in the topics listed below, then Biology may be the subject for you:

  • Human bodies and how they work;
  • Animals, large and small;
  • Interactions between plants, animals and humans; and
  • Doing practical laboratory work

Biology is the study of life in all its forms and enables students to engage in creative scientific thinking and to apply their knowledge in practical situations.  The study of Biology gives students opportunities to:

  • Gain knowledge and understanding of the living world
  • Investigate Biology by collecting and analyzing data in the lab and field
  • Evaluate Biological Issues
  • Develop respect and appreciation for the natural world

TOPICS

Semester 1 Being Alive
Would You Like Fries with that? – Nutrition
Can you cut it in this Life? - Adaptations
Semester 2 We are all in this together – Ecology
One + One – Reproduction
Semester 3 Staying Alive – Human Physiology
Passing it on - Genetics
Semester 4 Moving with the Times – Evolution
What is Killing Us? - Disease

 Practical work in the laboratory and in the field forms a major part of the course.  Students work in small groups to investigate biological questions.  Group discussions and individual research lead to a deep understanding of and an ability to evaluate current biological issues such as reproductive technology, gene modification and disease treatments.

PREREQUISITE SUBJECT
Students wishing to study Biology should have obtained a “C” in junior Science.  Scientific curiosity, a willingness to participate in learning experiences and a commitment to regular completion of homework are essential characteristics of successful students.

ASSESSMENT

  • Extended experimental investigations
  • Extended responses which may involve research of second hand data, analysis and synthesis.  These may be presented as written responses, orals or seminars
  • Written tasks eg. exams

Students are required to attend an overnight camp in Year 11 to complete syllabus requirements.  The cost of the Biology Camp is not included in the Text, Equipment & Resource Scheme and students will be advised the cost of this camp at the beginning of the year (or, at least one prior to the date of the camp).
