Mathematics A
Mathematics A has been designed as an alternative course to the more theoretical and academic subjects Mathematics B and Mathematics C. Mathematics A emphasizes the applications of mathematics in real-life situations and the use of mathematics in problem solving. Students are advised to check the prerequisites for tertiary courses as different courses require Mathematics B or Mathematics A.
TOPICS
The topics studied give students some mathematical background relevant to the business world, as well as being appropriate for everyday life experiences.
Topics include:
- Managing Money
- Elements of Applied Geometry
- Linking Two and Three Dimensions
- Maps & Compasses (Navigation)
- Data Collection and Presentation
- Exploring and Understanding Data
- Operations Research – (Networks and Queuing)
Because of the sequential, “building block” nature of Mathematics, students cannot afford to get behind in this subject. Homework must be done every night to achieve success.
PREREQUISITE SUBJECT
A student who obtains a “C” or better for Year 10 mathematics should be capable of handling Mathematics A. However, students will need to work consistently to obtain success.
ASSESSMENT
