A School of Excellence Program
Physical Recreation – Rugby League is a senior Authority-registered subject undertaken in Years 11 and 12. It derives from the Study Area Specification of Physical Recreation. Rugby League operates as Strand B of this SAS. It does not contribute to an Overall Position but the subject and result will be included on the Senior Certificate.
Wynnum State High School in partnership with Wynnum Manly Leagues/Seagulls and Bayside Junior Rugby League Clubs has established a School of Excellence in Rugby League.
The aim of the School of Excellence program is to:
- provide a School of Excellence for Rugby League within the Bayside area and to actively recruit boys who are interested in Rugby league from our district
- promote a general education and to develop students of good character
- promote the opportunity to learn and develop in the field of Rugby League as a player, coach, trainer, referee and administrator
- encourage the adoption of a healthy lifestyle
UNITS OF STUDY
- Fitness and conditioning – including weights
- Skill development
- Laws and refereeing
- Nutrition
- Psychological preparation
- Injury management
- Coaching principles
- Sports Administration and Promotion
The course will provide students with the opportunity to attain the following:
- athletic skills in the sport of Rugby League
- a First Aid Certificate
- a Coaching Certificate in Rugby League
- a Referee’s Certificate in Rugby League
- a Weight Lifting Certificate
- Level 1 General Principles in Coaching Certificate
BENEFITS FOR STUDENTS
- Sporting attainment may promote further options for career or leisure pursuits
- Involvement in Primary School Rugby League such as refereeing and coaching
- Possible involvement in Junior Clubs. These roles will be negotiated within clubs
- Development of good character
- Adoption of a healthy lifestyle
Students who wish to participate in the Rugby League School of Excellence will be involved with the School’s Cups Competition Program. All students attending Wynnum State High School will be eligible to play Cups competition. It is anticipated that strong Cups Teams will be fielded with players developing under the SOE program.
ASSESSMENT
The course will be assessed in the following ways:
| Theory | There will be written class assignments relating to fitness programs, nutrition, refereeing award, coaching award, first aid and sports trainer’s award |
| Practical | Skills, game play, tactics and athletic development |
| Fitness | Logbook related to personal program |
FACILITIES
The course will use the facilities of both Wynnum High and Wynnum Manly Leagues Club. These facilities are listed below:
- Wynnum State High School sports fields, gymnasium, Multi Purpose shelter, swimming pool
- Wynnum Seagulls playing fields and gymnasium.
Requirements for students attending Wynnum High to join the Rugby League School of Excellence
- Maintain acceptable study in all areas whilst enrolled
- Adhere to Wynnum State High School’s Behaviour Management Plan
- Commit to our desire to create players of high skill level and of desirable character
- Continue to play for their Junior Club. There is no intention for players to transfer Junior Clubs
- Maintain acceptable attendance record in all school classes
Please note that students cannot study Rugby League and Lifesaving. Wynnum Manly Leagues Club does offer some scholarships as a part of the School of Excellence Rugby League program. For more information please contact the Head of Department, HPE.
