Physical Education

Physical Education is a Senior Authority subject undertaken in Years 11 and 12 that contributes to an Overall Position.

Physical Education aims to contribute to the physical, emotional and social well being of students as they respond to and develop the concept of health as a dynamic quality of life within the school and community environment.  It is intended to facilitate intelligent performers in, about and through physical activity.

Each person is encouraged to have the desire to be fit and informed in terms of the three factors mentioned, and understand the value and science of fitness in the pursuit of maximal satisfaction in work and leisure.

TOPICS
Students will be given the opportunity to perform a variety of activities including aquathlon, touch, volleyball, racquet sports and other related activities.  All theoretical work will directly relate to the practical areas.

  1. Aquathlon - run, swim, run & Other Related Events
  2. Training Principles and Methods for Improving Performance
  3. Understanding Biomechanics & Other Factors which Assist in Improving Performance

VALUE OF THE SUBJECT
The immediate value of Physical Education is the influence it can have on personal health and fitness and complex thinking skills.  Some career areas where this subject provides helpful background are Physical Education teaching, Exercise Science and research community recreation, sports administration, coaching, the conducting of fitness courses and medical fields such as, nursing and physiotherapy.

PREREQUISITE SUBJECT
It is recommended that students have grades of “C” or higher in HPE651, Science and English in Year 10 as well as good health and fitness. Students with illnesses that prevent participation in strenuous activities or swimming should consult the Physical Education Staff before selecting the subject.

Students wishing to study Senior Physical Education and English Communication in Year 11 & 12 must have an interview with the Health & Physical Education Head of Department before enrolment is finalized.

A high commitment to regular practice and study of each unit is the key to success. Above average general fitness is essential.

The course is weighted equally between both Practical and Theory components.
