
English Communication
All Year 11 & 12 students must study either English or English Communication
English Communication is a senior Authority-registered subject. It does not contribute towards an Overall Position but the subject and result will be included on the Senior Certificate and may be used for tertiary entrance. The study area specification in English Communication aims to develop students’ ability to:
- Understand and appreciate Australia’s linguistic and cultural diversity
- Develop positive attitudes to and strategies for engagement in lifelong learning
- Gain knowledge, understanding and an appreciation of various forms of text
- Reflect on their own and other people’s knowledge, values and practices
- Communicate appropriately and effectively, with confidence
- Plan and work independently and as members of a group
In a continuation of the principles of KLA English, students will compose and comprehend language for particular purposes in each of the three components of Work, Community, Leisure in real-life or life-like situations.
English Communication runs as a companion course to English. Students will study some element of literature and media in the Community and Leisure Components, as well as written and oral communication in the workplace. Students will work both independently and in small groups to complete activities. Units of work are thematically organized and may include aspects of all three components.
ASSESSMENT
Students will complete both written and spoken assessment tasks each semester. Throughout the two-year course, tasks will be completed under different conditions.
- Tasks will be assessed against three criteria:
- Knowledge of contextual features
- Knowledge of textual features
- Knowledge and understanding of texts
