Awards

Awards Night
Awards Night is the highlight of the school’s academic year.  This is an evening event and it is held in late October or early November each year to recognise and reward academic excellence and to honour student achievers in cultural and citizenship fields.  Our school community looks forward each year to celebrating student academic achievement.  It is held in the school Hall.  Criteria for academic awards are published each year to the school community.

Dux of Wynnum State High School
Recipient will receive Books to the value of $150.00, Medal & Certificate.  Eligible students will be in Year 12 and will have studied at least five Authority subjects continuously for Semesters 3 and 4.
Criteria for Dux

  • Student with most Very High Achievements – VHAs – in best five Authority subjects
  • If there is more than one student with the same number of VHAs, then Dux is determined by comparing positions of VHAs on R6
  • If still the same then compare number of High Achievements – HAs
  • If still the same compare positions 2 HAs on R6
  • As for 3 but for Sound Achievements
  • As for 4 but SAs
  • If students are inseparable, more than one Dux is declared.

Vocational Education & Training Award
Recipient will receive Books to the value of $100, Medal & Certificate.  Eligible students will be in Year 12 and will have studied a minimum of two vocational education certificate subjects.

Criteria for VET Award

  • Student who has been awarded or likely to be awarded the VET Certificate/s for the respective subjects.
  • Student who has participated in Structured Workplacement /SAT in Years 11 or 12

Year 11 Academic Prize, Year 10 Dux
Recipients will receive Books to the value of $50.00, Medal for Year 10 Dux and Certificate.  This is awarded to the student at Year 10 and Year 11 who has the highest achievement across all subjects.  In Year 11, these will be Authority Subjects.
Criteria for Year 11
Similar to those used for Senior Dux, but tailored to suit the subjects studied.  Results from Semester 1 and Term 3 will be used to determine these awards.

Similar to those used for Senior Dux, but tailored to suit the subjects studied.  Results from Semester 1 and Term 3 will be used to determine these awards.

Awards of Excellence

Certificate of Excellence is awarded to those students who across subject units in each year level achieve as a minimum:

  • Year 8                 4As  and 3Bs
  • Year 9                 3As and 2Bs
  • Year 10               3As and 2Bs
  • Year 11,12          3As and 2Bs

Certificate of Distinction is awarded to those students who across subject units in each year level achieve as a minimum:

  • Year 8                 6 Bs
  • Year 9                 4Bs
  • Year 10               4Bs
  • Year 11,12          4Bs

Year 10 and Year 12 Subject Prizes
These are awarded to the top student in each subject in Years 10 and 12. Results from Semester 1 & Term 3 will be used to award academic prizes.  Recipients will receive a Book Voucher and Certificate - Year 10 - $20.00 voucher and Year 12 - $25.00 voucher.

Honours Awards
Honours Awards are made to those students who have made a most significant contribution to the social and or cultural life of the school.  The following are the Honours Awards for Wynnum High.                       

Jack Guy Trophy
This trophy is awarded to the Year 12 student who renders greatest service to the school in more than one field, showing dedication, commitment and care to the school community, rather than talent alone.  Trophy, certificate and Book

School Captains Award

This award is awarded to the School Captain in the case of not receiving either the Rotary Award for Citizenship or the Jack Guy Trophy.  Certificate, Book and pen

Sid Garrett Award

This trophy is awarded to the Year 10 student who renders greatest service to the school in more than one field and has been an outstanding member of the junior school.  Trophy, certificate and Book

Sam Sciacca Memorial Shield
This is awarded to a student in Year 12 who is basically a decent person and a quiet achiever.  The recipient will put consistent effort into something, where it is not much the individual’s talented achievement, but the worth of the common outcome which is valuable.  Trophy, certificate and Book

Rotary Award for Citizenship

This award is sponsored by the Wynnum and Manly Rotary Club and goes to a Year 12 student who has such qualities as a sense of responsibility, the ability to represent students within the school and also in the wider community.  This student will also have shown leadership qualities as opportunities arise and will have a set a good example to peers and younger students.

Caltex Best All Rounder
This award aims to encourage and recognise all round students in their final year of school.  It does not recognise the champion in a particular subject or particular sport or particular service activity.  Rather, the award recognises someone who participates in a wide range of activities and achieves excellent results in academic, sporting and service activities.
Some of the general achievements of this student include:

  • Represents the school in a number of sports
  • Achieves sound scholastic results
  • Participates in service and community activities
  • Displays excellent conduct
  • Has an excellent attitude, displayed through many contributions to the school and its community
  • Displays leadership qualities.

Medallion, certificate and Book

M Miles Trophy
This trophy is awarded to the Year 12 student who has contributed most to the Music program of the school during his or her years at the school.  Trophy, certificate and Book

Paul Lucas Trophy

Paul Lucas, Minister for Transport presents this trophy to the school.  He is the local member for Lytton. It is awarded to the Year 12 student who has excelled in Public Speaking.  Trophy, certificate and Book

Semper Fidelis Awards

These were awarded for the first time in 2005.  These awards acknowledge outstanding school service and citizenship.  They embody the school motto – Always Faithful.  Zillah would not have wanted a memorial award given on Awards Night in her honour but these awards are really given in her memory.  Certificate and pen

Eric Shaw Shield for Junior Debating – this shield is awarded to the best and most successful junior debating team - Certificate
EM Nixon Senior Debating Shield - this shield is awarded to the best and most successful senior debating team - Certificate

Scholarships and Bursaries
The Elizabeth Nixon Bursary – This bursary is awarded to a Year 12 student who enters a tertiary institution in the year after they finish Year 12.  The bursary is worth $500.00 and is awarded on academic achievement, participation in school and community activities and leadership and initiative.  The bursary is given in the year the student enters the tertiary institution.  For more information please contact the school office.

Zillah Bunn Scholarship – It is an annual award and is awarded to a student who has overcome a number of difficulties to succeed in their schooling. This scholarship is announced at the Year 12 Graduation Breakfast each year and is sponsored by the Manly Hotel.  The scholarship is to support the student in the pursuit of their chosen career.

P&C Encouragement Awards – This award is given by the P&C Association to support the Elizabeth Nixon Bursary and scholarship as deemed appropriate by the P&C

Rugby League Scholarships – There are a number of scholarships awarded each year for the School of Excellence in Rugby League.  For more information please contact the school office.

Major Douglas Griffith MBE Bursary – This bursary was first awarded in 2006 and aims to assist a student of Wynnum High to further his or her career.  The bursary is given to a student in Years 9 -12 who is able to exhibit high degrees of leadership skills in the school and general community, scholastic and sporting achievement.  This Bursary is $1000.00 and is awarded in October of each year.

ADF Leadership and Teamwork Awards – These awards are given to three students – one from Year 10, Year 11 and Year 12.  They are awarded by the Australian Defence Forces.  The selection criteria are based on the following: leadership, teamwork, values, problem solving, resourcefulness, communicator, cooperation and community involvement.

 

Sports Awards Presentation
This is an evening event held in the school Hall.  It is the highlight of the school’s sporting year where sporting achievement is rewarded and celebrated.  It is held in late October each year.  Interschool sporting team achievements are recognised as well as student’s individual excellence is celebrated.  It is an event not to be missed.

Sound Showcase and In-2-Arts Night
Sound Showcase is held regularly to showcase the musical talent and expertise of our performing arts program at Wynnum High.  The Instrumental Music program features at these evenings.  Our Music, Drama students and Film and Television students also showcase their considerable talents at In-2-Arts Night which is held towards the end of the year.  These evenings are well worth attending.
