VISUAL ART

The knowledge and skills developed in Senior Visual Art can play a significant role in future leisure pursuits or career areas.  Students considering a career in architecture are strongly advised to consider art.  Some other careers where an art background is advantageous are teaching, childcare, signwriting, fashion design, professional artist/craftsman, photographer, commercial artist and advertising, occupational therapy, drafting, engineering, hairdressing, chef/food presentation and landscape and design.

All students will complete a Foundational Studies Unit in Semester One.  This allows students to experiment with art media and learn skills in a wide variety of art areas.  It allows those students who have not completed junior Art to catch up on skills, techniques and media used in art as well as providing an opportunity for previous art students to further develop skills. Art appreciation and the development of writing skills that relate specifically to Art are taught during Year 11.

Students will work on semester based units that focus on concepts and themes.  Each semester students complete folios of practical art from media areas such as 3D sculpture, painting, drawing, design, ceramics, printmaking and mixed media.

Each semester unit includes associated art history and appreciation.

PREREQUISITE SUBJECT
Junior Art is not a prerequisite for senior Art, however, those students who have taken junior Art will more easily make the transition into senior Art.  An interest in Art is essential.

ASSESSMENT
Practical work is assessed by a group of Art teachers who look at how successful the student has been in solving the given task, creativity and skill in handling equipment and art media. Students will complete written assignments throughout Semesters 1 - 4 relating to contemporary Australian artists and artists from other cultures and eras.  Students are required to have a Visual Diary. All developmental ideas and working drawings/designs will be kept in this book.
