Mission Statement
The Student Council of Wynnum State High School will work together with a sense of commitment and endeavour to achieve our proposed goals. Through communication and cooperation we will strive to uphold and promote the good name of Wynnum State High School within the community.
Leadership
All students have many opportunities to be leaders in the school by the manner of their participation in both classroom and extra-curricular activities, by being exemplary role models across the school community and by representing the school in the community to the best of their ability. Some students will also have leadership opportunities in a more formal way through their membership of the Student Council.
Goals:
As the Student Council of Wynnum State High School, we will endeavour to create a greater sense of belonging and school spirit by:
- Utilising the House Group system in order to improve communication, participation and interaction within the whole school community
- Raising funds effectively to achieve specific projects on time and in full Promoting the improvement of the physical well-being of the school
- Creating a prominent Student Council presence within the school community
The Student Council comprises a total of 36 representatives of the student body. There are 23 members from Year 12 and 13 members from Year 11. These 36 Student Councillors form six committees to carry out various responsibilities to promote and endorse student welfare and community involvement.
Four Junior Leaders each from Year 8, Year 9 and Year 10 work with a Committee, attending Committee Meetings and Student Council Meetings.
Two liaison teachers work with each Committee in an advisory capacity.
The selection process for Student Councillors begins in October. Successful new Councillors work with the current Student Council prior to the Year 12's graduating. Nominations for Committee Chairpersons are held in February with the induction of the Student Council taking place in March.
Junior Leaders
The role of a Junior Leader is to form a link between the Student Council and Year Group whereby information, ideas and suggestions can be exchanged with a common goal being to develop and maintain a school environment that will be an enjoyable experience for all at Wynnum State High School.
The responsibility of a Junior Leader while serving on the Student Council is to attend one lunchtime meeting per week. These meetings will either be a full Student Council Meeting or a Committee Meeting. Year 11 Councillors will be assigned as "buddies" to Junior Leaders to assist and guide them whilst working with the Student Council.
The Student Council at Wynnum High is a very active and positive force in the life of the school. It exists to serve the student body and to be an active student voice. The Council meets fortnightly and has a teacher co-ordinator.
There are seven committees that make up the Student Council. These are:
- Arts
- Environment
- Formal
- Magazine
- Social
- Sport
- Welfare
Each committee has a teacher mentor who works with the committee. The committees work to provide services and activities for students and the school as a whole.
The Sport Committee for example, helps to organise and run the Athletics Carnival as well as lunchtime sport activities such as inter House Group Touch competitions.
The Social Committee is the major fund raising arm of the Student Council. The money at socials raised is used by the Student Council to the benefit of all students in the school.
The Welfare Committee supports charities in our community and promotes values of care and concern for our wider human community. In 2007, this committee ran a Harmony Day, raising awareness on issues of racism.
The Environment Committee looks at innovative ways to ensure that we all look after our school environment and particularly pick up our litter.
Each Committee has an elected Chairperson and the School Captains each year are chosen from the Chairpersons.
School Captains
Each year there is a boy School Captain and a girl School Captain. This is the highest position of honour that the school can bestow on a student. The school captains are chosen from the Committee Chairpersons of the Student Council.
Committee Chairperson
A Chairperson leads each committee of the Student Council. It is a position of great honour in the school.
House Captains
House Captains and House Vice Captains are elected to lead the four sport houses of Wynnum High. House Captains are selected from Year 12 and House Vice Captains are selected from Year 11 students. They play a very important role in the sporting life of our school.
Junior Leaders
Junior school students are able to become a part of the Student Council as there are four Junior Leaders selected from each year level. These students are assigned to one of the seven Committees of the Student Council.
